4T80e

Overview

The 4t80e is the strongest 4 speed automatic transverse transmission option available. The 4t80e was common behind Northstar engines in front wheel drive cars so it has the same bellhousing as the 3800 and should be able to fit in most 3800 platforms.

The A340e transmission was a toyota 4 speed automatic that happened to have the correct 60 degree bellhousing for the 3800.

This correct bellhousing can be found in an Isuzu Rodeo.

Muncie 4 speed (Fiero)

General Info

Not to be confused with the RWD Muncie 4 speed, the transverse Muncie is quite a bit different and not nearly as strong.

Early Fiero's could be optioned with a 4 speed manual transmission. This is the Muncie 4 speed referred to here on this page.

Getrag 282/284

Overview

These transmissions are 5 speed transverse transmissions from Getrag that were optioned in a few front wheel drive cars and some v6 powered Fiero's. There were two different bellhousings on these transmissions though depending on which car they came in. Be sure to use the 60* bellhousing instead of the Ecotec bellhousing.

Getrag F23

Overview

The F23 is considered to be the successor to the Getrag 282 and 284. It is another 5 speed transmission from Getrag that was available in a few FWD GM delta platform cars.

Similar to the F40, this is a 3-axis design which differentiates it pretty heavily from the 282 and 284.

Getrag F40

Overview

The Getrag F40 transmission is a transverse manual 6-speed transmission. It is cast aluminum and certified for up to 295 lb-ft of torque.

Strength

There are many who consider this transmission 'unbreakable', however there are also many who believe it has not been tested as thoroughly as other options either.

Aftermarket/Non-Factory Transmission Options

Here are a few other transmissions that have worked pretty well before with a 3800.

Keep in mind if you're doing a swap, especially with a manual trans, that there are quite a few different flywheel/flexplate options that you could have on your 3800.

Tremec T56

Overview

[t56.jpg]

The T-56 is a legendary transmission in the 3800 world. This transmission is known for being nearly bullet-proof in stock form and offers plenty of aftermarket support. There are few who have done this swap though still.

The T-56 is a 6 speed manual longitudinal transmission. It was the standard transmission behind a lot of LS-based V8 engines. You can find this in Camaro's, CTS's, Corvette's, and many other RWD performance cars from GM.

These transmissions are all very similar to each other externally and in function. They very in strength quite a bit though.
